1. Trainer/facilitator begins workshop by thanking, welcoming teachers to the mandatory CHARACTER COUNTS! workshop.
2. One participant raises hand immediately and says, “I can’t believe we have to be here! I can’t do one more thing! My plate is full”
3. Trainer: “Tell me what you mean by that. Sit down here and share with us what’s on your plate.” (hand them the flimsy plate) ”What’s one thing you teach that takes a lot of time?”
4. Participant: “Reading! I have to spend time teaching the students how to read…” Trainer: “Let’s use an apple to represent that.” (place an apple on the plate) Trainer: “What other things fill our plate?”
5. Participant: Continues on and on with other subjects. With each topic, add another piece of fruit to the plate.
6. Trainer: “What are some of the things kids do that contribute to your full plate?”
7. Participant: “Well, they cheat sometimes… ”
8. Trainer: “Really, Would it help if they knew how to be more trustworthy?”
9. Teacher: “Yah, That would help me out a loti” (trainer holds up the plate that says trustworthy and then puts it under the plate with all of the fruit).
10. Repeat steps 6-9 for each Pillar: ie. – good manners- respect do homework- responsibility problems at recess- fairness being nicer to each other- caring follow rules- citizenship
11. Trainer: “Wow, your plate looks full but strong. Do you think this would help you?” Participant: “Yes!”
12. Trainer (turn to audience)- “Now are you ready to hear more about CHARACTER COUNTS!?”
